Course Outcomes
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Understand the parts of a grass plant and identify some of the common grasses in Southern Africa.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Gain an understanding of the different veld types found in Southern Africa and the influence these veld types have on production.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Introduced to the ecology of the veld focusing on plant succession.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Introduction to the morphological and physiological aspects of veld management.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
Understand veld condition assessments, patterns of deterioration of the veld, veld condition score sheet, grass species composition and basal cover of plant density.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6
Understand the plant vigour and forage production, the effect of litter and plant residues, soil compaction, erosion and assessment of the range trend over time.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 7
Understand the principles of veld management and the application of veld management systems.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 8
Understanding and implementation of a veld management plan.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 9
Understand the effect of grazing animals on veld – both grazing factors and behavioural factors.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 10
Introduction to common grasses and legumes used for pastures in Southern Africa.
4 Week course at 5 hours per week as a guide, but students can complete on own time
