This course provides foundational knowledge and practical skills for managing and maintaining agricultural workshops and infrastructure. It covers the design and layout of farm workshops, safe use of tools and equipment, and legal safety standards. Learners gain skills in building small concrete structures, bricklaying, plastering, roofing, plumbing systems, and basic electrical and solar installations relevant to farming. The course also includes training on various fencing types, dam construction, welding methods, and essential metalwork techniques. Overall, it equips individuals with the technical competencies required for effective farm infrastructure development and maintenance in a Southern African context.

Specific Outcomes

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Describe the layout and design features of an efficient farm workshop, including zoning, organization, and the correct identification of basic hand tools and measuring equipment.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Explain the functions of common workshop equipment and materials, outline safe cutting and joining methods, and interpret legal safety and first aid requirements relevant to agricultural workshops in Southern Africa.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Demonstrate an understanding of the purpose, materials, and process for constructing small concrete slabs in agriculture, including reinforcement, curing, and layout considerations.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Describe the theoretical principles of farm building practices, including the making and laying of bricks, mortar mixing, plastering techniques, reinforcement concepts, and roofing types and materials.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
Identify the components and functions of agricultural plumbing systems and explain their applications in irrigation, drainage, rainwater harvesting, and compliance with water legislation.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6
Explain the role of 220V and 3-phase electrical systems and solar power in farm operations, including system components, usage advantages, and safety requirements.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 7
Compare different types of agricultural fences and explain the tools, materials, and installation procedures used in barbed wire, mesh, electric, and security fencing systems.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 8
Demonstrate knowledge of farm dam planning and construction, including site selection, materials, design elements, spillway function, legal compliance, and basic maintenance principles.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 9
Describe various welding methods used in agriculture, including arc, MIG, TIG, and gas welding, and explain their applications, equipment requirements, and safety considerations.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 10
Explain key concepts of agricultural metalwork, including the theory behind measuring, cutting, bending, fastening, and surface finishing of metals used in farm infrastructure.

3 Week course at 5 hours per week as a guide, but students can complete on own time
