Course Outcomes
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Understand the importance of calf rearing and the selection of calves for the future of the herd and farm viability.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Understand the importance of pre-natal nutrition, calf management at birth and the need for calf colostrum intake.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
The learner will identify the importance of suckling in the calf rearing system and learn about the various ways calves can be suckled.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Understand the different artificial methods of calf rearing and the important aspects of whole milk feeding and housing.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
The learner will be able to manage the early weaning system and gain knowledge in the alternative systems of calf rearing.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6
The learner will be able to implement a milk substitute feeding program and gain the necessary knowledge for veal production.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 7
The learner will be able to identify and understand the routine tasks in calf rearing such as earmarking, castration, dehorning, environmental requirements and disease management.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 8
Understand and implement post weaning management for heifers and steers.
4 Week course at 5 hours per week as a guide, but students can complete on own time
