Understand water legislation relevant to agriculture, assess the advisability of irrigation, and explain the hydrological cycle and its role in irrigation planning and water management.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Understand the importance of soil water, including the different forms of soil water, water movement within the soil, and water availability to plants, as well as key soil–water relationship terms, drainage principles, tillage practices, and commonly used measurement units.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Identify suitable land for irrigation by understanding soil requirements, land selection criteria, and the importance of matching soil characteristics to appropriate irrigation practices.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Understand and manage different irrigation methods, including scheme layout and spacing requirements, and the operation of overhead, flood, gated pipe, and drip irrigation systems.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
Understand and apply additional irrigation management considerations, including pump selection and operation, drainage requirements, system efficiency, and cost implications of irrigation systems.
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6
The learner will be able to implement and understand other considerations in irrigation scheduling which include pumps, drainage and costs.
This course provides learners with comprehensive, practical knowledge to plan, establish, manage, and harvest a wide range of vegetable, fruit, soft fruit, and nut crops. It covers garden layout, composting, seasonal cropping, sowing guides, fertilisation, irrigation, pest and disease management, and harvesting and storage practices across crops such as brassicas, onions, leeks, peas, beans, potatoes, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, citrus, deciduous fruit, and soft fruits and nuts. The course runs over 3 weeks with a recommended study time of approximately 5 hours per week and is fully self-paced, allowing students to complete the training in their own time. It is AgriSETA accredited under Nosa Agricultural Services, Service Provider Code AGRI/c prov/0459/13.
